An Ode To The New Beverly Cinema by Julie Marchese http://www.jeremyasher.net/thehatch/2347 http://www.jeremyasher.net/thehatch/2347#comments Fri, 28 Jan 2011 18:02:36 +0000 Jeremy Asher http://www.jeremyasher.net/?p=2347

Julia Marchese at the New Beverly

I’ve already recounted one of my amazing experiences at the New Beverly Cinema here in good ole Hollywood. Very special thanks to Edgar Wright and the “Wright Stuff II” Festival. But Julie Marchese is an employee at the cinema and her article that I am re-publishing here, so perfectly captures my enthusiasm for the theater, I felt compelled to republish it.

Thank you Julie and the entire New Beverly staff! Thanks to Mr. Beaks at Aint It Cool News for making me aware of this article in the first place!

- Jeremy

An Ode To The New Beverly Cinema by Julie Marchese

I moved to Los Angeles in September of 2001, fresh from college and brimming with excitement for the new digs I would be sharing with my best friend Marion Kerr, my new city, and the chance to finally fulfill my dreams of becoming a movie star. Somehow, within two weeks of moving here I came across a New Beverly Cinema calendar, and upon seeing it, I announced “I want to work here.” Just looking at that piece of paper solidified it for me. My first double feature was The Goonies and Gremlins, and I remember there were some crazed Corey Feldman fans in the house who would scream every time he appeared on-screen. A theater where people loved Corey Feldman? I was home.

The New Beverly Cinema is the place I had always dreamed of finding. Family owned and operated, small and cozy, not worried about being the biggest or best, not concerned with uniforms or up selling or socking it to you at the concession stand. A place solely for true lovers of film who were coming to share the experience with a like-minded audience. With the invention of VHS and DVD, most films are available to watch at home, but I fully believe that watching a film as it is originally meant to be seen – in a theater, with an audience – cannot be surpassed. And the fact that the New Bev also caters almost exclusively to the most hardcore of film geeks? It was love at first sight. I asked the owner Sherman Torgan for a job that very first day, and would continue to do so every time I came for the next five years.

Marion (who is also my current co-worker at the New Bev!) and I were so overwhelmed by our first visit to the New Beverly that we wrote Sherman a letter telling him how much we loved the place. The next time we visited, we asked if he had received it. Sherman’s eyes glazed over with affection; “Did you girls write this? ” – he pulled it out of his shirt pocket -”Thank you so much.” He let us in for free that day and we felt like movie stars.

We very quickly adopted a routine. We would stop for a cheap pizza on the way to the theater and bribe Sherman with a couple of slices for letting us bring it in. My persistence was relentless, and I constantly hounded Sherman for a job. He was always sweet about it, but would firmly let me know that there simply weren’t any shifts available.

Some memories of the New Bev before I worked there: A first date with a gentleman who made me fifteen minutes late to see The Stunt Man – I told him that missing the beginning of a film was completely unacceptable to me and I never went out with him again. A first date with a gentleman who, upon seeing Orson Welles slap Rita Hayworth across the face in The Lady From Shanghai trailer, asked me if I would hit him like that – I never went out with him again. The first time Sherman let me see the projection booth. I was in complete awe. I didn’t think I could love the theater any more, and then that just increased it tenfold.

Sherman finally caved in after five years of begging in May of 2006, and gave up one of his shifts for me. I was completely over the moon, and would jump around every day when I got to work. After about a month, Sherman asked me “Why didn’t I hire you five years ago?”. Sigh. Why indeed? I was unbelieving of my luck. Getting paid to work at my favorite place in the entire world, and watching movies for free! I began recognizing the clientiel, and was thrilled when I began to be addressed by name, instead of just “that chick who works here”. I felt like i had to prove myself, being the only girl working there – was I a true film geek? Did I earn my position? I’d like to think over the years I have proved my enthusiasm not only for the theater, but also for cinema itself.

In July of 2007, I attended a double feature of Errol Flynn pirate movies. Sherman was there, hanging out on the steps with his son, Michael. As I left, I called “Hey, Sherman! See you tomorrow!” he smiled and waved and called out jocularly, “Absolutely!”. I never saw him again. Sherman’s sudden death was a blow to all of us. To have someone you’re used to seeing every day suddenly disappear is jarring and devastating. I was really thrown for a terrible existential loop after his death, not being able to comprehend how someone so good and so young could be taken away. I didn’t know how to cope, especially since it seemed his death was going to mark the end of the New Beverly as well. Our ex-landlord sold the property on the day that Sherman died to two young upstarts who – no joke – wanted to change the space into a Chipotle and a Supercuts. I was furious. Not only was my favorite place going to be taken away from me, but it was going to fall victim to corporate consumerism – everything it stood against. I couldn’t bear it. But I felt helpless – what could I do to save it? I frantically called the Historical Preservation society to see if we could have it proclaimed a landmark, anything, anything to save it.

And then – a miracle . Michael found the original contract that Sherman had first signed with the ex-landlord. He had the right of first refusal when selling the theater. Quentin Tarantino, a man who I consider one of my personal heroes, stepped in and bought the building. Not only did he buy the building, but he renovated us completely . He promised publicly that as long as he was alive the New Beverly would be too. He saved us. And why? Because Quentin sees in the New Beverly everything I see and he couldn’t bear to see it disappear either. I feel forever indebted to him, and think he’s probably the coolest landlord I will ever have. With a bit of an employee change, and help from our friends, the New Bev reopened, with Michael as our owner.

It was right after this chaotic time that we played a double feature of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Edgar Wright called us and asked if he could come to the theater and introduce the films. He asked us! We of course said yes, and the show was a sell out smash. I was sitting on the side of the stage, giddy, watching Edgar talk and feeling the excitement from the crowd – it was completely palpable. And that’s when the idea came to me. Why not ask Edgar to program some of the movies that he loves? Have him talk about the films that inspire him, films that make him feel the way that the audience feel about his films? So I brought it up to him and he immediately gave me a hearty yes. The New Beverly guest programming series was born.

I don’t know how well you know Edgar – I’ve gotten to know him pretty well over the last three years – but he is a genius. Yes, he’s a great filmmaker, but he’s also smart, eloquent, funny, compassionate, incredible at organization, at self promotion, at being accessible to his fans and a complete walking encyclopedia of cinema. The first Wright Stuff festival took place in December of 2007 and it totally and completely blew everyone’s mind. The films! The guests! The Q&A’s! It was like nothing I had ever seen. I was so happy to see the New Beverly really and truly back on its feet, swarming with happy patrons greedily eating up all the cinema they could. And to look at all of it and know that I had put it together – along with infinite help from all of the New Bev staff and Edgar of course – was beyond my comprehension. I was so very proud – and I knew Sherman would be too.

Edgar really got the ball rolling as well. After his series, more guest programmers followed fast and furious – Eli Roth, Joe Dante, Diablo Cody, Seth Green, Patton Oswalt, Rian Johnson, Peter Bogdanovich, Stuart Gordon…. For me, an absolute dream list of filmmakers – and to watch them geek out over films just like I do – revelatory. Not to mention of course, the countless guests who have come to introduce films out of the goodness of their hearts over the years. To help facilitate an ongoing series that, in my mind, has changed the New Beverly from a great repertory house into the foremost revival theater in the world, well, it leaves me speechless.

And now, in January 2011, we’ve come full circle. Edgar Wright has returned to the New Beverly to program the Wright Stuff II. And the same excitement is there! Every screening that I introduce Edgar to the crowd and stand at the edge of the theater watching him talk about the films, I just smile. I love to watch him share his enthusiasm about cinema with the crowd, and I love watching the audience return it. An audience just happy to be watching a movie with a group of people who love film as much as they do. And that makes me so ecstatic. Because that’s what the New Beverly Cinema is about, at its core. Film lovers.

I hope, of course, that the New Beverly will be around for a very very long time. I hope we continue to have guest programmers come and share their favorite films. I hope I will always be involved with the theater in some way. I am so incredibly lucky not only to have a job that I absolutely adore, but one that gives happiness to so many people. To be even a small part of that is astounding. And even if I never make it as a movie star, well, being a star at the New Beverly Cinema ain’t a bad back up plan.

Edgar Wright Trilogy at the New Beverly

The Wright Stuff is an amazing geek fest film series that is programmed by Edgar Wright at the New Beverly Cinemas in L.A. This year I was able to make it and thank god for that!!!

Prepare yourself Los Angeles for the return of filmmaker Edgar Wright as he descends on The New Beverly with his epic screening series The Wright Stuff II. Mark your calendars because Mr. Wright will be delivering a double dose of features, special guests, and more surprises starting January 14th and continuing through January 31st, 2011.

This was one of the top three best filmgoing experiences in my life. What else make that list? The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Tuesday, extended edition films at the Arclight Hollywood on Return Of The King’s opening day. And, whether you like the film or not, going to see Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace was absolutely amazingly stunning an experience.  — Well, you can imagine then, that seeing this on Saturday, I did not have any of those expectations or remote thoughts that this could meet those epic moments.

The Tickets

We bought our tickets to the Edgar Wright Trilogy night two weeks ago in a made flurry of internet buying. We sat there refreshing our web browsers every three seconds from 11:59a until the green light lit at 12 noon. Tickets sold out within 10 secs. We couldn’t get ONE ticket to the Edgar Wright Trilogy – we were trying to get 13. Over the course of the next hour, Ehron and I refreshed madingly until finally someones shopping cart expired and huzaah! we were able to secure 5 tickets to Saturday nights show! We also got 6 tickets for Friday night for a few friends. This was like a geek version of Wall Street bull pens.

We also secured tickets for several of the other billings over The Wright Stuff II’s screenings.

The Food

On Saturday night, Ehron, Michele, Gary and I met in line awaiting entry to the cinema. Ehron and I had prepared themed food for the evening.  We had Zombie Shepard’s Pie Monkey Brains - this used elements from Shaun of the Dead (Pub Food, Zombies and Clyde the Monkey) and Hot Fuzz (Pub Food and Stuffed Monkey). Vegan Apple Raspberry Field Greens – Hot Fuzz (they speak of apple carts and raspberries) and Scott Pilgrim (super Vegan powers). Vegan Cupcakes (super Vegan powers!). Yum! See the pic below.

Shaun Of The Dead

Now @SimonPegg had earlier tweeted that he would not be at the screening – but the bullshit detector was correct and he did suprise arrive. Besides laughing, cheering and loving the film with a room full of geeks – we also got a great LONG Q&A with Edgar, Simon and Lucy Davis (who played Dianne in Shaun and is DAWN in BBC The Office!!!). This was incredible. And see that poster at the top of the blog? I bought that awesome piece of art and got all three of them to sign it! It is already framed and about to hanging in my apartment.

Hot Fuzz

This movie keeps getting better with each subsequent viewing. And watching it with the crowd was so much fun. And we did get a whole new Q&A with Edgar and Simon afterwards. Oh! And a funny text message from Nick Frost as well – that I sadly can not recall.

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

We didn’t even START SP until 1am… OY! We were all exhausted. But we had treat special guests again from… Brandon Routh, Anna Kendrick, Michael Bacall and about 6 other supporting cast members! The Q&A was a little weak on this one, but I think that was because we were all SOOOO tired. But the movie was just as spectacular and still is my favorite movie of 2010. By the way… Brandon Routh IS Superman. Holy crap. Not only is a GINORMOUS – but coming from a straight guy I can say with all honesty, he is frakkin’ attractive. Cheesy Rice!

Additional Celebs

Introducing Edgar at the beginning of the night was Director Joe Dante! I have no idea why, but what the hell!?! He is awesome. Director of Gremlins, Innerspace and SOOOO much more. Sitting in the audience we also spotted known geek Seth Green. And, of course, theatre owner Quentin Tarantino was in the back row. I did get to say hello to him and that was pretty amazing.

Brazil

On Sunday night, Michele, Ehron and I came back for more, despite a complete lack of sleep… Tonight it was just as sold out but not nearly as crazy. Seeing the International Cut of Brazil on the big screen was awe inspiring. Terry Gilliam is such a genius. Tonight, Edgar was back – this time with Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, to discuss Brazil. This was a lot of factoids from them. A little bit of gushing about their first watches.

And a great email that Terry Gilliam sent to Edgar stating something to the effect of, “Thanks all for coming. I was considering recently of remaking Brazil – but unfortunately Bush and Cheney had gotten to it first.

Delicatessen

Jeneut’s first film and it was amazing. Seeing it on the big screen just made me smile ear to ear.

OH TRAILERS!!

Quentin Tarantino had hand selected amazing mostly vintage trailers to go along with all of the movies. This is half of the amazing evenings. SUUUUUUCH great stuff.

Shaun of the Dead

Carrie – classic and great trailer
Modern Problems – crazy Chevy Chase joint from the 80′s. never heard of it but it looks ridiculously awful and I already added it to my Netflix queue!
Groundhog’s Day - one of the greatest comedies of all time
Man with Two Brains – Steve Martin at his all time zaniest!
Paul – A brand new trailer for Simon & Nicks new flick for 2011. It actually looks funny in this trailer!

Hot Fuzz

48 Hours – Perfect to get you in the buddy cop mood, despite Eddie not being a cop.
Electra Glide in Blue – I MUST SEE THIS MOVIE. “A 5 foot 4 inch cop in a 6 foot 2 inch world – starring Robert Blake”. WHAT THE FRAK?! AWESOME
Fuzz – I can’t even describe this amazing film. Burt Reynolds, Jack West, Tom Skerritt, Raquel Welch, Yul Brynner. Funk ass cops. MUST SEE!

Newman’s Law – George Peppard, Billy Dee Williams and Rutger Hauer in a 70′s cop joint. MUST SEE!
Nighthawks – another funk cop joint. Wow.
Supercops – Real life cops called Batman and Robin. Directed by the director of Batman: The Movie… from 1967… wow. MUST SEE!
Kill Point – SO MUCH COP FUNK!

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Zabrieske Point - I can’t tell you what I was seeing… Naked people in the desert. huh???

Candy – HOLY MACKREL!!! MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!!! Marlon Brando, Walter Matthau, Ringo Starr… and – brain bleeding…

Shogun Assassin – SO clearly direct inspiration for Kill Bill
After Hours – VERY early Scorsece joint. Weird choice, but great.
Fight Club – Wow. I LOVE this movie. But this trailer didn’t tell me the rules…
The Blues Brothers – SMILES!

Brazil

Blade Runner – Original trailer. SO good. MUST BUY ON BLU-RAY NOW!!! PS – This trailer uses “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” by The Ink Spots… great tune!
Time Bandits – The film that allowed Brazil to escape!
Zardoz – Sean Connery in a crazy utopian mind fuck. I have seen this on Netflix and it is a MUST SEE.

Slaughterhouse 5 - I still haven’t seen this and I must see it ASAP!

Delicatessen

The Cars That Eat People – Say WHAT?!?! This movie looks amazing!!!

The Cook, His Wife, The Thief and her Lover - Stars Michael Gambon, Helen Mirren and others… I heard this is wonderful and I must see it.
Hudsucker Proxy – early Coens and I must re-watch
Being John Malkovich – just re-watched this a few weeks ago. I love you Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman.

The Wright Stuff TWO

This is the second “Wright Stuff”, after a great success with it in 2009.

New Beverly Supported By Quentin Tarantino

Cinema nearly lost one of these last gems. The New Beverly in Los Angeles has been in danger for some time. With the rise of DVDs, the theater was suffering a possible closure and new life as a Super Cuts until Quentin Tarantino, a longtime fan and patron of the theater, stepped in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he volunteered to pay $5,000 a month to keep the theater open. He’s been doing so steadily until 2007, when owner and family patriarch Sherman Togan passed away. The theater was in danger of closing again, as the landlord had a buyer bidding for the space as the Togan family tried to stall for time and rescue. Luckily, Tarantino stepped up again, and this time purchased The New Beverly outright. “I always considered the New Beverly my charity — an investment I never wanted back,” he toldTHR. “I already had a good relationship with the family and the theater, so it was a natural step.” – By Elisabeth Rappe from Cinematical

Special Guests

Special Guests, besides Edgar Wright, are coming to most of the screenings. Already we’ve had Simon Pegg, Lucy Davis, Brandon Routh, Richard Kelly and more!

It's Frakkin' Cheap!

Tickets are $7 each for the whole night!!

I still have tickets for the American Graffiti/Animal House night and the Wanderers/Warriors night… MUST SEE MORE!!!

WAHOO!!

“The New Beverly Cinema presents The Wright Fest II – A two week film series arranged by Edgar Wright at Quentin Tarantino’s New Bev Cinemas! It’s been brilliant so far! I’m going to more!!”

Gallery 1988 hits another homerun with this Funny Or Die sponsored exhibit. Michele and I went to the opening reception and it was full of fantastic art from some incredible artists. These are two litho prints I picked up that night.

Inspired by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - by Mark Welser “The Daily Show”

I bought this one for me, cause it was awesome.

Inspired by Larry David / Curb Your Enthusiasm - by Josh Cooley “Prit-Tay Good”

I bought this one for Ehrons birthday because he (and I) are both huge Curb fans.

If you haven’t checked out Gallery 1988 yet – stop what you are doing and check it out. They are amazing. Local galleries on Melrose or in Venice or they are online.

First Grade Comics: "Vegetarian Zombie" by Jeremy Asher

This is a thinker… take a minute if you need :-)

So, I’ve decided that on occasion I come up with random thoughts and jokes and crap like that, that would be great for little web comics. The only problem is… I can’t draw! In fact, I draw so terribly that in my humble opinion, it is pretty much elementary school level. I mean, I think I would basically get a silver star in my first grade art class… Hence, “First Grade Comics” was born.

Every once in a while, I’ll post a new one. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them!

Gallery 1988 strikes again with some fantastic pieces. The theme for this opening was Funny Or Die Presents ‘Is This Thing On?’

There were a bunch of great pieces, I bought two, which I’ll post later. One inspired by Curb Your Enthusiasm and one inspired by The Daily Show.

This Judd Apatow one was pretty funny though. Art by Casey Weldon. Trouble With Jew Fros?

My Dream – Dragon vs Transformers http://www.jeremyasher.net/thehatch/878 http://www.jeremyasher.net/thehatch/878#comments Tue, 04 Jan 2011 13:58:22 +0000 Jeremy Asher http://www.jeremyasher.net/?p=878

So… I decided to start a dream journal last night. So, when I woke up out of a dream in the middle of the night – with my eyes closed, I grasped for my iphone and recorded what I could remember from my dream. I was basically still completely asleep when I was talking. I just transcribed exactly when I said with my gravily still sleeping voice. This made me laugh at its ridiculousness – so I decided to share my inane ramblings – exactly as it came out of my mouth…

January 4, 2011 @ 5:58AM

“I had a dream where I was trying to save the world in some way and it was like a Jackie Chan adventure and, uh, I had some ancient stone that the ancient stone… um… um… belonged to some man who was riding a lawn mower and could change himself into a giant dragon. A huge dragon, like the size of Godzilla and he started to burn – er burn – buildings down in order to find *garble garble garble* because *garble* saving the world *garble garble* giant – and I try to get away. I’m running through the parking lot – and I was running from the Amelia Earhart Library cause that was the building I was in when it was and they kept on chasing me – he turned from dragon to man and he was on the riding lawn mower and he was chasing me again and I was like, “oh shit” – and I, uh – *cough* – and then I went to, uh, and I finally he saw me and I went to go hide and there was a car wash, and then I thought ‘oh, maybe I can hide in car wash’ thinking that the fire wouldn’t hurt me from… his fire… cause of the fire from the car wash and I laid down in – and if I laid down in one of the car frames, uh… then I could use that to transform myself into a Transformer – but I couldn’t – I was struggling with it and the car wouldn’t transform and I just like knew that it could and I knew I had the ability to do so – but for some reason I was stuck – it felt like I was sorta paralyzed, uh, but I could do it… and… I was just trying to save the world.”

Emanuel, Ian and I went to Yosemite for a few days in early October 2008 to spend a tremendous time with tremendous friends. It was beautiful and fun!

Various pics from my hike today to the top of the Flatirons here in Boulder!

Sorta spur of the moment I decided to hike Chautauqua in Boulder today… And then I decided to climb to the top of the Flatirons because, well, I never had before. I have to say the view is spectacular.8/8/2010
